چکیده

1. Physics and Semantics A passenger boards a fast train. It takes her some distance, reverses course, and returns to the starting platform. She reports that according to her clock, the trip took n seconds. An observer who remained behind on the platform gets a different reading. Using his clock, he records a longer time interval m. These claims are compatible with the clocks being in perfect order. Modern physics tells us that time is relative. The duration of the trip, understood as the temporal distance between the departure and the return events, will depend on the chosen frame of reference. The passenger and the observer belong to different frames. This is the source of the discrepancy. Suppose that the passenger and the observer speak a language that is like ours with possible differences arising from the assumption that no one in their community knows about modern physics. Let us call this language '19th Century English'. Imagine that the agents, in different conversations, utter sentences (1) and (2) respectively: Passenger: (1) The duration of the trip was n seconds. Observer: (2) The duration of the trip was m seconds.

Truth in the Context of Christian Faith and its Relation to Other Religions

In the following reflections on the understanding of truth in regard to Christian faith (or even in regard to religious faith, experience, and language in general), I advocate a relational interpretation of truth. Truth in that sense is understood not primarily as an intellectual assertion but as a qualification of a dynamic, existential, personal relation. Truth is the trustworthiness of that ...

Contexts, Demonstratives, and Validity

In his seminal work, “Demonstratives”, David Kaplan shows how to define validity (or logical truth) for a language containing indexical expressions such as ‘I’, ‘now’, ‘today’, ‘that’, and others. Kaplan’s great insight in that work is that the indices for context and for circumstances of evaluation (which Kaplan takes to be time and world) play conceptually distinct roles in semantics. To capt...

Practical use of receiver operating characteristic analysis to assess the performances of defect detection algorithms

Defects detection on images is a current task in quality control and is often integrated in partially or fully automated systems. Assessing the performances of defects detection algorithms is thus of great interest. However, being application and context dependent, it remains a difficult task. This paper describes a methodology to measure the performances of such algorithms on large size images...

The Afterlife of a Text in Walter Benjamin’s Theory of Translation

Walter Benjamin proposes that a work of art does not belong to a specific time; rather it is transient. A work of art has a 'temporal effect' which is considered as the 'context' of the work in which it has been written. The 'context' cannot be reconstructed to be the same as what once existed;it is constructed.Translator's job is to recreate the life of the original work from one language to a...

Relative truth and the first person

In recent work on context-dependency, it has been argued that certain types of sentences give rise to a notion of relative truth. In particular, sentences containing predicates of personal taste and moral or aesthetic evaluation as well as epistemic modals are held to express a proposition (relative to a context of use) which is true or false not only relative to a world of evaluation, but othe...
